SUMMARY, EXPLANATION AND LIMITATIONS:
Vimentin recognizes a 57-60 kDa protein, which is identified as vimentin. It shows no cross-reactivity with other closely related intermediate filament proteins such as desmin and GFAP. Vimentin is the main intermediate filament protein in mesenchymal cells, and therefore is of value in the differential diagnosis of undifferentiated neoplasms including melanoma and sarcoma. Vimentin can also serve as an internal control for formalin-fixed tissues that are over-fixed.
Immunogen: Purified vimentin from pig eye lens.
Staining pattern: Cytoplasmic.
Positive control: Tissue sample from lymph node, tonsil.
This antibody is designed for the specific localization of human vimentin using IHC techniques in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
Mesenchymal tumors vimentin expression is practically the rule, but should not be forgotten that there tumors of epithelial origin that coexpress 100% with cytokeratins, as is the case of thyroid carcinomas, pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands and some renal carcinomas. Additionally, for the universal staining the anti-vimentin performed on tissue and blood vessels of any histological preparation, is considered the best internal marker to evaluate the results of immunostaining (actually a negative for vimentin histological preparation suggested that there has been a problem in the antigenic unmasking performed on the same or processing of immunostaining), so it is considered essential to include it in all panels of immunostaining for tumors.
